sighting it (the new moon) and break (fast) on sighting it (the
new moon), but if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the
number (of thirty).

HADITH_No 2380
Allah's Messenger (peace_be_upon_him) said: Observe fast on
sighting it (the new moon) and break it on sighting it. But if
(due to clouds) the actual position of the month is concealed
from you, you should then count thirty (days).

The Messenger of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) made a mention of the
new moon and (in this connection) said: Observe fast when you
see it (the new moon) and break fast when you see it (the new
moon of Shawwal), but when (the actual position of the month is)
concealed from you (on account of cloudy sky), then count thirty

HADITH_No 2391
Kurayb said: Umm Fadl, daughter of Harith, sent him (Fadl, i.e.
her son) to Mu'awiyah in Syria. I (Fadl) arrived in Syria, and
did the needful for her. It was there in Syria that the month of
Ramadan commenced. I saw the new moon (of Ramadan) on Friday. I
then came back to Medina at the end of the month. Abdullah ibn
Abbas asked me (about the new moon of Ramadan) and said: When
did you see it? I said: We saw it on Friday night. He said:
(Did) you see it yourself? I said: Yes, and the people also saw
it so they observed fast and Mu'awiyah also observed fast.
Thereupon he said: But we saw it on Saturday night. So we shall
continue to observe the fast until we complete thirty (fasts) or
we see it (the new moon of Shawwal). I said: Is the sighting of
the moon by Mu'awiyah not valid for you? He said: No; this is
how the Messenger of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) has commanded us.
Yahya ibn Yahya was in doubt (whether the word used in the
narration by Kurayb) was Naktafi or Taktafi.

Some of the people said: It was three nights old, and others
(said) that it was two nights old. We then met Ibn Abbas and
told him we had seen the new moon, but that some of the people
said it was three nights old and others that it was two nights
old. He asked on which night we had seen it; and when we told
him we had seen it on such and such night, he said the Prophet

till the time it is seen, so it is to be reckoned from the night
you saw it.

NARRATOR Anas ibn Malik
SAHIH MUSLIM
HADITH_No 6868
We were with Umar between Mecca and Medina so that we might
begin to look for the new moon. I was a man with sharp eyesight,
so I could see it, but none saw it except myself. I began to say
to Umar: Don't you see it? But he could not see it. Thereupon
Umar said: I shall soon be able to see it (when it shines more
brightly). I lay in bed. He then mentioned to us of the people
of Badr and said: Allah's Apostle (peace_be_upon_him) showed us
one day before (the actual battle) the place of death of the
people (participating) in (the Battle) of Badr and he was
saying: This will be the place of death of so and so tomorrow,
if Allah wills. Umar said: By Him Who sent him with truth, they
did not miss the places (of their death) which Allah's Apostle (peace_be_upon_him)
had indicated for them. Then they were all thrown in a well, one
after another. Allah's Apostle (peace_be_upon_him) then went to
them and said: O, so and so, the son of so and so; O so and so,
the son of so and so, have you found what Allah and His Apostle
(peace_be_upon_him) had promised you? I have, however, found
absolutely true what Allah had promised me. Umar said: Allah's
Apostle (peace_be_upon_him) said: How can you talk as bodies
without souls in them. Thereupon he said: You cannot hear more
distinctly than (they can) what I say, but with the exception
that they have no power to make any reply.

HADITH_No 1153
AbuUmayr reported on the authority of some of his paternal
uncles who were Companions of the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him):
Some men came riding to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and
testified that they had sighted the new moon the previous day.
He (the Holy Prophet), therefore, commanded the people to break
the fast and to go out to their place of prayer in the morning.

NARRATOR Abdullah ibn Umar
ABU DAWUD
HADITH_No 2312
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: The month consists of
twenty-nine days, but do not fast till you sight it (the moon)
and do not break your fast till you sight it. If the weather is
cloudy, calculate it thirty days. When the twenty-ninth of
Sha'ban came, Ibn Umar would send someone (who tried) to sight
the moon for him. If it was sighted, then well and good; in case
it was not sighted, and there was no cloud and dust before him
(on the horizon), he would not keep fast the next day. If there
appeared (on the horizon) before him cloud or dust, he would
fast the following day. Ibn Umar would end his fasting alone
with the people, and did not follow this calculation.

HADITH_No 2318
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) used to count the days
in Sha'ban in a manner he did not count any other month; then he
fasted when he sighted the new moon of Ramadan; but if the

NARRATOR Abdullah ibn Abbas
ABU DAWUD
HADITH_No 2320
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Do not fast one day or two
days just before Ramadan except in the case of a man who has
been in the habit or observing a fast (on that day); and do not
fast until you sight it (the moon). Then fast until you sight
it. If a cloud appears on that day (i.e. 29th of Ramadan) then
complete the number thirty (days) and then end the fasting: a

Husayn ibn al-Harith al-Jadli from the tribe of Jadilah Qays
said: The governor of Mecca delivered a speech and said: The
Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) took a pledge from us that
we should perform the rites of hajj after sighting the moon. If
we do not sight it and two reliable persons bear witness, we
should perform the rites of hajj on the basis of their witness.
I then asked al-Husayn ibn al-Harith: Who was the governor of
Mecca? He replied: I do not know. He then met me later on and
told me: He was al-Harith ibn Hatib, brother of Muhammad ibn
Hatib. The governor then said: There is among you a man who is
more acquainted with Allah and His Apostle than I. He witnessed
this from the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). He then
pointed with his hand to a man. Al- Husayn said: I asked an old
man beside me: Who is that man to whom the governor has alluded?
He said: "This is Abdullah ibn Umar, and he spoke the truth. He
was more acquainted with Allah than he. He (Abdullah ibn Umar)
said: For this is what the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him)
commanded us (to do).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON MOON SIGHTING
As most of us know, the moon goes
through several phases. The months of the Islamic Calendar are
based on sighting of the new moon every month. So what is a new
moon? A new moon is "born" when the moon of the previous month
disappears (i.e. the moon goes from a slightly visible crescent
to a completely black sphere that is impossible to be seen).
About 17-23 hours after the new moon is born, a thin crescent
becomes visible on earth. Once again, as we were taught by Allah
(Qur'an 2:189) and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), it
is the sighting of this crescent that marks the start of a new
month. Therefore, even though a moon may be born on one day, it
may not been seen until the next day. Furthermore, if a new moon
is born less than 15 hours before sunset on day 1; it will not
been seen until sunset of day 2; and when it is finally seen it
is 15+24=39 hours old and will look very thick. This does NOT
mean that this is a second day crescent. A first day crescent
can be very thin in some locations and it can also be thick in
other locations because of time difference. As Muslims, we
should always remember that our first priority is to follow the
teachings of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) who told us
to start the month when we see the crescent, not when the moon
is "born." If we do that, Insha-Allah we will start the month at
the "right" time (the time that Allah intends for the month to
start).
Question: Where in Quran
and Hadith it is mention to start new month by sighting Moon.
Answer: In Quran see
Surah Al-Baqara, verse 189.
Translation: "They ask you concerning the new Moons. Say:
They are but signsto mark fixed period of time in (the affairs
of) men and for Hajj"
There are numerous Hadiths in which prophet Muhammad (SalallahoAlaiheWasalam)
ordered Muslims to start the new month by sighting the Moon.
Here is one for reference.
Allah's Messenger (peace_be_upon_him) said: Observe fast on
sighting it (the new moon) and break it on sighting it. But if
(due to clouds) the actual position of the month is concealed
from you, you should then count thirty (days).(NARRATOR
AbuHurayrah, SAHIH MUSLIM)

Question:If the moon is
sighted any place on earth, then why all Muslim Ummah cannot
start the Islamic month on the same day. (Oct 1,1997)
Logical Answer:When the moon
is sighted in a place on earth, right at that moment there are
two days and dates prevailing all over the globe. Some places
have already started their next day. Those places can not start
the month at that time. They have to wait for the next sunset
time to start new month, and hence their month will not start on
the same day as the place where the moon was sighted.
Suppose the moon is only possible to be seen in Hawaii and
nowhere in the world. Even if we know ahead of time that the
moon will be sighted in Hawaii, the time of starting Islamic
month will be after sunset in Hawaii (around 6pm). At that time
in Tokyo, the time will be 1pm of the next day. If this was
month of Ramadan, this is way past Suhoor time in Tokyo. They
cannot start fasting 9 hours before the month can begin anywhere
in the world e.g. in Hawaii in this case.
Straight Answer: Nowhere in
Quran or Hadiths it is said to follow a particular country or a
Masjid, instead every where in Quran and Hadiths, Muslims are
ordered to follow Quran and the Sunnah of the prophet Muhammad (salallahoAlaiheWasalam).
Question: Why does the first
crescent look thin in some months and thick in other months?
(Oct 31,1997)
Answer: For a specific
location where you are, the new crescent moon in some months has
the least age, in other months has larger age, and yet in some
other months, its age is just below the visibility range (say,
e.g., 12 hours), and then the next day its age grows by 24 more
hours (to 36 hours). Of course, this 36 hour old moon looks so
big that people may say that it is definitely second day moon.
For your locality, it is still first day moon. However, for some
other localities, it may have been seen the day earlier (at the
age of 17 hours), and for them, it is second day moon when it is
41 hours old. So, you see, a 36 hour old moon may be the first
day moon and a 41 hour old moon which is not much different from
36 hours is a second day moon.
Question: By
calculation and all modern day Technology, we can accurately
predict when new Moon will "born". Given that why we cannot
start New month accordingly.
Answer: Surely, we can
use all the technological advancement in predicting the birth of
new Moon but we cannot make our decision solely based on these
information because the hadiths of Rasulallah (salallahoAlaiheWasalam)
clearly states that "Allah's Messenger (peace_be_upon_him)
said: Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan)
observe fast, and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal)
break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast
for thirty days. (Sahih Muslim)" i.e. we are ordered to see
the Moon and not when the Moon is "born". Now consider this, If
we only have to rely on when the New Moon will born then why
Rasulallah (salallahoAlaiheWasalam) ordered us to see the Actual
Moon. Was it difficult for Rasulallah to see the Moon behind the
Cloud or to find when the new Moon would born if Allah Wanted.
No, instead, Rasulallah Gave the Ummah a simple solution till
the day of Resurrection so that the Ummah can start the new
month in right way.
Question: Can one follow the Majority decision to
start Ramadan or Eid?
Answer: One can follow the
Majority's Decision only if their decision is based on Quran and
Sunnah. Otherwise, follow those who start Ramadan or Eid
according to Quran and Sunnah even if they are less in numbers.
Question:
Does the size of first sighted moon (thick or thin)
matters?
Answer: In Shariah, the size
of first sighted moon does not matter whether it is thick or
thin. The following hadith clearly state that size of new moon
does not matter, all it matters is when the new moon has been
sighted.

| CONCEPT OF
UNITY IN ISLAM Islam means -
Complete Submission to the Will of Allah.
There is no but, if or else. Once you have declared yourself a
Muslim then you have to abide by the Commands of Allah and
Rasulallah (salallahoAlaiheWasalam), specially when the commands
are very clear and unambiguous. As mentioned in Quran "O' Who
believe! Enter into Islam whole-heartedly; and follow not the
footsteps of the evil one; for he is to you an avowed enemy"
(Surah Al-Baqara, verse 208). In another place Allah commands
Muslims "Whatever the Apostle gives you accept it; and
whatever he forbids you, refrain from it. And fear Allah, for
Allah is strict in punishment". and numerous places Allah
said " Obey Allah and His Messenger". From all the above
Verses it is very clear that Muslims have to follow commands of
Allah and His messenger in order to success here and after. Let
see what medicine Quran gives for the unity. In Quran Allah Said
" And hold fast, all together, by the rope of Allah and be
not divided among themselves" (Al-Quran: Surah Al-e-Imran,
Verse 103). All the Scholars of Islam are agreed the Rope of
Allah is Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet (salallahoAlaiheWasalam).
And let not to forget the famous Hajja-tul-wida serman by our
beloved prophet Muhammad (SalallahoAlaiheWasalam) in which he
said " .... Arabs has no superiority
over non-Arabs and Non-Arabs have no Superiority over Arabs, You
are all equal except by piety and good action…….. .I leave
behind me two things, the Qur'an and my example, the Sunnah and
if you follow these you will never go astray…" (Prophet's
Last Sermon) ".
The Unity of Muslim Ummah is not in celebrating Eid on same day
throughout the World but the Unity of Ummah is in following the
Quran and Sunnah of our beloved prophet Muhammad (salallahoAlaiheWasalam).
If each and every Muslim starts following the Commands of Allah
Ta'ala and His Habib Muhammad (SalallahoAlaiheWasalam) then
Unity among Muslims will prevail by itself. Today why Muslims
all over the world are in misery and so divided, even in a
places where they celebrate Eid on one day? it's because Muslim
have stopped practicing Islam and does not give any importance
to the Sunnah of the prophet (salallahoAlaiheWasalam). History
has witnessed that whenever Muslims have followed the Quran and
the Practices of the prophet (SalallahoAlaiheWasalam), they were
united and had ruled the world.
No doubt every Muslim likes to have Unity but at what cost? By
abandoning the path of our Prophet and his companions! If we
keep demolishing the sunnah of our beloved Prophet (SallalaHoAlaiHeWassalam)
one by one in the name of modernization and unity then what will
be left at the end? Imaan without Amal!
Living in America does not mean that we are free to break rules
for our convenience that has been set by Quran and Hadith. Take
for example this situation, Most Muslims in America are in their
offices during Zuhur and Asr prayers. They do not get time to
pray, but can we make Ijma (concenses among muslims) to let
those muslims be excused for these prayers. In the same way,
even if all the Muslims in the world decided to change the
percent of Zakat from 2.5% to 1% , can they do that? Similarly,
starting of Ramadan and celebrating Eid is a clear matter
established by Quran and Sunnah and there is no room for
personal opinions or Ijma of Ummah, And can this rule be
extended to other established matters? Absolutely not, otherwise
it will create a fitna that will have no bounds. Unity of Ummah
is in following the Quran and Sunnah of our Prophet (SalallahoAlaiHeWasallam)
as declared by Allah Ta'ala in Quran-ul-hakeem
" And hold fast, all together, by the rope
of Allah and be not divided among themselves" (Al-Quran: Surah
Al-e-Imran, Verse 103). "he who obeys the messenger has
indeed obeyed Allah" (Surah al-Nisa, verse-80).
We sincerely appeal to all Muslims to follow in the path of
Shariah. The Shariah that was established by our Prophet
Muhammad (SalallahoAlaiHeWasallam) and those who followed him to
bring Islam to our generation. Such Sharia is the only gaurantee
that our "Ibadah" will be accepted by Allah Subhana Ta'ala.
[Wama Alaina Illalbalah - Our job is to convey the message, May
Allah Ta'ala give us courage to accept the truth.] |
